SAST vs DAST vs IAST vs SCA in 2026: What Actually Catches Bugs in Modern Codebases

Every enterprise AppSec program has some combination of SAST, DAST, IAST, and SCA tools. Most of them are misconfigured, noisy, or chasing the wrong vulnerabilities. Here is the real-world comparison for 2026, the tool shootout (Semgrep, Snyk, Checkmarx, Veracode, SonarQube, Contrast), and the integration patterns that do not drive engineers insane.

# SAST vs DAST vs IAST vs SCA in 2026: what actually catches bugs in modern codebases

Here's the real AppSec conversation every mid-market engineering org has with us.

Them: "We have Checkmarx. And Snyk. And Veracode. And we just added Contrast."

Us: "How many findings are open?"

Them: "4,200."

Us: "How many did you close this quarter?"

Them: "11."

The problem in 2026 isn't that AppSec tooling doesn't work. It's that every vendor sold a different category (SAST, DAST, IAST, SCA), the categories overlap, the findings triplicate, and nobody has the engineering headcount to triage. Tools became dashboards. Dashboards became decoration.

This post is the honest comparison. What each category actually catches, which tool in each category is worth running, and the integration patterns that produce fixed bugs instead of a growing backlog.

The four categories in one paragraph each

We see this pattern show up on almost every engagement.

SAST (Static Application Security Testing). Scans source code or compiled artifacts without running them. Finds patterns that indicate vulnerabilities: SQL injection, XSS, hardcoded secrets, unsafe deserialization, crypto misuse, path traversal. Fast to run, integrates into CI, produces lots of findings. Known for false positives.

DAST (Dynamic Application Security Testing). Runs the application and throws attacks at it. Finds what's exploitable: XSS, SQLi, auth bypass, SSRF, IDOR, misconfigurations. Slower to run, requires deployable environment, generally lower false positives but lower coverage.

IAST (Interactive Application Security Testing). Instruments the running application (via agent) and observes data flow during testing. Finds real vulnerabilities with the context of runtime behavior. Higher accuracy than SAST or DAST but requires agent deployment.

SCA (Software Composition Analysis). Scans dependencies for known vulnerabilities (CVEs). Flags vulnerable package versions. required for any modern codebase (your own code is 5% of what runs in production. The rest is dependencies).

You need SCA. You almost certainly want SAST. DAST is valuable if you run it properly. IAST is worth it for teams that have maturity to integrate it.

SAST in 2026: tool shootout

Semgrep

The 2026 darling of the SAST space. Fast, open source core, rules as YAML files readable by any engineer.

Pros:

  • Fast scans (minutes, not hours)
  • Open source community rules + commercial rules
  • Custom rules are trivial to write. Engineers can author their own patterns
  • Minimal false positives compared to traditional SAST
  • Strong developer experience (in-IDE, CLI, CI)
  • Semgrep Code, Semgrep Supply Chain, Semgrep Secrets. Covers SAST + SCA + secrets scanning
  • Pricing transparent and reasonable

Cons:

  • Pattern-matching-based, so deep dataflow-dependent bugs (taint analysis through complex call chains) require the paid "Pro" analyzer
  • Coverage for niche languages less mature than Java or JavaScript

Best for: modern startups and mid-market, engineering-first organizations, companies migrating away from legacy SAST.

Checkmarx (One)

Traditional enterprise SAST. Deep dataflow analysis, mature rule sets, compliance-focused.

Pros:

  • Strong dataflow analysis (catches taint across function boundaries)
  • Comprehensive language coverage
  • Enterprise features (reporting, integrations, audit trails)
  • AppSec as-a-Service options
  • Strong on compliance mapping (PCI, OWASP Top 10, SANS 25)

Cons:

  • Slow scans (often hours for large codebases)
  • High false positive rate. Developers ignore the output unless security team triages
  • Complex to operate and tune
  • Licensing costs among the highest in the market
  • UI feels dated compared to modern tools

Best for: large enterprises with established AppSec programs, regulated industries with audit requirements, organizations that need the dataflow depth.

Veracode

Binary-based SAST (uploads compiled artifacts, not source). Long history, compliance-heavy use cases.

Pros:

  • Binary SAST can catch issues in code you don't have source for
  • Combined SAST + DAST + SCA + IAST platform
  • Policy-based governance integrates well with compliance programs
  • Strong in regulated industries (financial services, federal)

Cons:

  • Slow feedback loop (upload, wait, results) vs modern inline scans
  • Binary upload model doesn't fit cloud-native CI patterns as naturally as Semgrep
  • Higher cost tier

Best for: regulated industries with compliance-driven AppSec requirements.

SonarQube / SonarCloud

Code quality tool that has added security scanning. Huge developer adoption for code quality side.

Pros:

  • Massive developer mindshare (already integrated in thousands of orgs for code quality)
  • Free Community Edition
  • In-IDE integration with SonarLint is excellent
  • Quality Gates stop deploys on new findings

Cons:

  • Security rules less comprehensive than dedicated SAST tools
  • Better at quality + some security than at pure security depth
  • For serious AppSec, typically deployed alongside Snyk or Semgrep than as the primary SAST

Best for: teams already using Sonar for code quality, wanting to add basic SAST.

Snyk Code

Part of the Snyk unified platform. DeepCode AI-powered SAST.

Pros:

  • Integrates with Snyk Open Source (SCA) for unified developer experience
  • AI-powered analysis, good signal-to-noise
  • Strong in IDE integration
  • Developer-friendly reporting

Cons:

  • Pricing structure has gotten more complex
  • Some security teams prefer dedicated SAST to a unified platform

Best for: teams already on Snyk for SCA that want a cohesive tool.

GitHub Advanced Security (CodeQL)

CodeQL is the query language powering GitHub Advanced Security. Semantic code analysis, deep.

Pros:

  • Tight integration with GitHub (results appear in PRs, Security tab, SARIF)
  • CodeQL queries are extremely expressive
  • Powered by the same engine that found thousands of bugs in open source (GitHub Security Lab)
  • Free for open source repos

Cons:

  • Only works in GitHub ecosystem
  • Learning curve to write custom CodeQL queries
  • Scan times can be long
  • Enterprise licensing required for private repos

Best for: GitHub-centric engineering organizations.

Fortify Static Code Analyzer

OpenText (formerly Micro Focus) legacy enterprise SAST.

Pros:

  • Extensive language coverage
  • Comprehensive rule set built over decades
  • Federal/defense deployments

Cons:

  • Dated user experience
  • Heavy to operate
  • Developer adoption poor compared to modern alternatives

Best for: existing Fortify shops, federal/defense with established programs.

DAST in 2026: tool shootout

OWASP ZAP (now Zaproxy)

Free, open source, maintained by Checkmarx and the OWASP community. The baseline DAST everyone should know.

Pros:

  • Free
  • Active community, regular updates
  • Scriptable via Python, Java, scripts
  • Can be automated in CI/CD
  • Headless mode for CI integration
  • Passive + active scanning

Cons:

  • Not a SaaS, requires self-hosting and tuning
  • Raw output needs triage. No enterprise reporting out of the box
  • Authentication handling for complex SPAs is fiddly

Best for: teams with security engineers who can tune ZAP. Smaller organizations. Starter DAST before moving to commercial.

Burp Suite Enterprise

PortSwigger's enterprise DAST. Built on top of Burp Suite Professional (the pentester's favorite).

Pros:

  • Best-in-class crawler and scanner
  • Authenticated scanning with session handling
  • Good for SPAs and modern JavaScript apps
  • Scheduled scans, reporting, integrations
  • Same engine pentesters use. Findings align with pentest methodology

Cons:

  • Pricing (per concurrent scan or per-site, enterprise tier)
  • Setup for complex authentication flows requires config work

Best for: organizations with internal pentesting capability, teams that want the same tool for automated and manual testing.

Invicti (formerly Netsparker)

Enterprise DAST with proof-of-exploit engine.

Pros:

  • Proof-based scanning. Tool actively proves vulnerabilities with real exploits, reducing false positives
  • Good for compliance scanning (reports map to OWASP, PCI, etc.)
  • Solid authentication handling

Cons:

  • Enterprise pricing
  • Less flexible than Burp for pentester workflows

Best for: enterprise with compliance-driven DAST needs.

StackHawk

Modern DAST, API-focused, developer-first.

Pros:

  • CI-native (runs inside CI pipelines)
  • OpenAPI spec-driven scanning for APIs
  • Developer-friendly reporting in PRs
  • Reasonable pricing

Cons:

  • Less mature than Burp/Invicti for traditional web app scanning
  • Strong on APIs, less deep on complex auth flows

Best for: API-first organizations, modern CI/CD-heavy teams.

Detectify

DAST + attack surface management in one platform. Crowdsourced detection modules from researchers.

Pros:

  • External-facing attack surface scanning
  • Crowdsourced detection signatures (new vulns added by ethical hackers, flowed into the platform)
  • Good for monitoring your external footprint continuously

Cons:

  • More focused on external surface than deep internal app testing
  • Pricing scales with asset count

Best for: external-facing assets monitoring, organizations that want ASM + DAST combined.

Acunetix

Invicti-owned DAST, simpler deployment than Invicti enterprise.

IAST in 2026: tool shootout

IAST is a smaller market with fewer vendors but high accuracy for teams that adopt it.

Contrast Security

The dominant IAST vendor.

Pros:

  • Runtime instrumentation gives accurate findings with context (data flow, parameter values, stack traces)
  • Low false positive rate
  • Works during normal application testing (QA, integration tests, manual testing). No separate scan needed
  • Strong Java and.NET support, expanding other languages

Cons:

  • Agent deployment adds operational complexity
  • Performance overhead (usually acceptable but not zero)
  • Pricing is premium

Best for: mature AppSec programs willing to deploy agents, especially in Java/.NET shops.

Synopsys Seeker

Synopsys' IAST offering. Comparable to Contrast.

HCL AppScan (IAST tier)

Part of the HCL AppScan family. Covers IAST alongside SAST and DAST.

SCA in 2026: tool shootout

SCA is effectively mandatory. Dependencies change daily, CVEs are disclosed constantly, and your node_modules folder has 900 packages you've never heard of.

Snyk Open Source

Market leader in SCA.

Pros:

  • Excellent vulnerability database
  • Automatic PRs for fix upgrades
  • License compliance in addition to security
  • Developer-friendly reporting
  • Strong integration across CI, IDEs, registries

Cons:

  • Pricing scales with repo count and can surprise growing teams
  • Some feature gating between tiers

Best for: most teams needing SCA.

GitHub Dependabot + GitHub Advanced Security

Native to GitHub. Free for open source, paid for private with GHAS.

Pros:

  • Zero-friction setup if you're on GitHub
  • Auto-PR generation
  • Integrated with Code Security in GitHub UI

Cons:

  • Less rich vulnerability metadata than Snyk
  • Best only if you're fully on GitHub

Best for: GitHub-native teams.

Sonatype Nexus Lifecycle + Firewall

Enterprise SCA + software supply chain firewall. Blocks vulnerable packages at the artifact repository layer.

Pros:

  • Policy enforcement at the registry level (stop vulnerable packages from ever being installed)
  • Strong in regulated industries
  • Comprehensive vulnerability intelligence

Cons:

  • Enterprise setup complexity
  • Pricing

Best for: large enterprises with formal SDLC requirements.

JFrog Xray

Tightly integrated with JFrog Artifactory. If you already run JFrog as your artifact repository, Xray is a natural extension.

Semgrep Supply Chain

Semgrep's SCA offering. Integrated with their SAST platform. Reachability analysis (is the vulnerable code path called in your app) to reduce false positive noise.

OWASP Dependency-Check

Free, open source. Fine for starter SCA but the vulnerability database and UX trail commercial tools.

Trivy

Open source, great for containers and IaC. Scans container images, filesystems, git repos, Kubernetes configs.

Where most programs fail

"We bought the tool but never tuned it"

SAST out of the box produces enormous finding volumes, most of which are either false positives or low-impact. The fix: start with a ruleset limited to critical/high severity, add custom rules for your specific tech stack. And expand over time.

"Findings sit in a dashboard"

No one looks. No one fixes. The fix: route findings into the developer's workflow (PR comments, ticket auto-creation, Slack alerts). Make fixing them easier than ignoring them.

"Severity is CVSS"

CVSS alone isn't enough. A critical SQL injection on your admin console is different from a critical SQL injection on a decommissioned marketing page. Add reachability analysis (is the code reachable in production?) and business context (is the asset exposed to the internet?).

"Scan blocks CI but the blocker bypass is trivial"

If engineers can click "dismiss" on a critical finding to merge, the gate is theater. Require justification, log bypasses, and review them during security reviews.

"DAST only runs on production"

Running DAST on production is a good way to crash production. Run it on staging with production-like data. Or run it in a dedicated AppSec environment. Don't scan production without scheduling and coordination.

"IAST agents not deployed in CI integration tests"

IAST shines when it's running during normal testing. If the agent is only in production, you're missing the entire CI feedback loop.

"SCA alerts but never upgrades"

Finding a CVE in lodash@4.17.15 is only useful if someone upgrades to 4.17.21. Automated PR generation (Dependabot, Renovate, Snyk auto-fix) is essential. Manual upgrade tracking fails.

"Secret scanning is post-commit"

The secret is already in git history. The fix is pre-commit hooks (gitleaks, detect-secrets, trufflehog) that stop the commit before the secret enters the repository. Post-commit scanning is cleanup, not prevention.

The AI-assisted AppSec wave (2025-2026)

Every vendor in this space now ships LLM-powered features:

  • Auto-fix suggestions. SAST tools generate patches for detected bugs. Snyk Code Fix, Semgrep Assistant, GitHub Copilot Autofix, Checkmarx One. Quality varies. Generally good for common patterns, less reliable for complex bugs.
  • Triage automation. LLMs prioritize findings based on codebase context, business logic, and exploitability. Useful for reducing triage backlog.
  • Custom rule generation. Describe a vulnerability in natural language, get a SAST rule. Semgrep Assistant, Snyk Code.
  • Explanation of findings. LLMs generate natural language explanations for findings. Helps junior developers understand why a pattern is risky.

These features help but don't replace human review. Auto-fix without human review ships broken patches. LLM triage misses context humans catch. Use them as accelerants, not substitutes.

For most mid-market engineering organizations (50-500 engineers, modern stack):

  1. SAST: Semgrep (Pro if budget allows). In IDE via Semgrep VS Code, in CI via Semgrep Cloud
  2. SCA: Snyk Open Source OR Semgrep Supply Chain OR GitHub Dependabot (if on GitHub)
  3. Secret scanning: gitleaks (pre-commit) + GitHub secret scanning (server-side)
  4. DAST: OWASP ZAP for simple apps, Burp Suite Enterprise or StackHawk for API-heavy
  5. Container scanning: Trivy (open source) or Snyk Container
  6. IaC scanning: Checkov, Trivy, or Snyk IaC
  7. IAST (optional, mature teams): Contrast Security

For regulated enterprises:

  • Keep existing Checkmarx/Veracode for compliance mapping
  • Add Semgrep for developer-facing fast feedback
  • Snyk or Sonatype for SCA
  • Burp Suite Enterprise for DAST
  • Contrast for IAST

Integration patterns that work

PR comments, not dashboards. Findings appear inline on the PR, not in a separate tool. Bottom-up not top-down.

Severity-gated deploys. Critical findings block merge. Medium/low findings create tickets but don't block.

Auto-PR for dependency upgrades. Renovate or Dependabot configures auto-PRs on vulnerable dependencies. Auto-merge for patch/minor updates (with tests passing). Review for major.

Nightly full scans + fast inline scans. Inline scans on every push are fast and narrow. Nightly scans do the full sweep.

Findings deduplication. The same bug detected by SAST, DAST, and IAST should appear as one finding, not three. Tooling like Snyk or Apiiro consolidate across categories.

Security champion program. One engineer per team owns AppSec. They triage findings for their team, interface with security, and handle escalation. Force multiplies a small security team.

Quarterly rule tuning. Security and eng together review rules, false positive rates, time-to-fix metrics. Disable noisy rules, add missing checks.
